On the occasion of the Year of Mercy, Fr José Antonio Nieto, Superior of our General House, holding also the pastoral responsability of the Mater Orphanorum Chapel, addressed the Apostolic Penitentiary with the petition of having our Oratory declared a "Temple of Mercy", on behalf of the elderly people who are confined in our former General Curia, that is currently a Nursing Home for the aged: many of them, in fact, being disabled, are not in condition to go to the churches that are endowed with this privilege of the Jubilee Year.
The petition had been submited on February 25 and the response, to the community's great surprise, arrived on March 9 in the form of a Decree!
By means of this important document, the Genoese Card. Mauro Piacenza, the Major Penitentiary of Pope Francis, in the name of the Pope himself, "... willingly GRANTS, drawing from the heavenly treasures of the Church, the Plenary Indulgence of the Jubilee, under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father)."
This privilege, however, is not only granted to the sick faithful who are living in the Centre adjacent to the General Curia, but, as it was to be expected during the Holy Year of Mercy, it has been extended to other persons connected with the said Chapel. The Decree in fact mentions –and this is the surprise!– that, "apart from the faithful who are guests of the Nursing Home S. Girolamo Emiliani" this privilege is also granted to the Somascan religious... and to other faithful who, sincerely repenting and moved by charity, on condition that, having their hearts in line with the spiritual goals of the Holy Year, they will pay a visit, in the form of a pilgrimage, to the said chapel and will participate there in the sacred rites or will perform other spiritual practices".
And "to make it easier to obtain the divine forgiveness, through the Church's keys, for the sake of pastoral charity, this Penitentiary warmly exhorts the Clerics Regular of Somasca to make hem selves available, with a prompt and generous spirit, to the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance in the said chapel and to the administration of the Eucharist to the sick, so that the people may be in condition to attain the gift of the indulgence, to be obtained once a day, with the possibility of offering it, in the form of suffrage, for the Souls in Purgatory, by paying a visit –by desire- to the Oratory and offering their sufferings to God All-merciful, through the intercession of Mary".
To this purpose, following the indications of the ecclesiastical authority, with the aim of giving official value and information about this privilege that converts our Chapel into a Jubilee Temple for the remaining months of the Year of Mercy, our Superior General on Palm Sunday opened the ''Holy Door" of our Oratory, with a rite that was both symbolic and solemn, in the presence of many faithful and especially with the participation of the disabled guests of the Nursing Home San Girolamo Emiliani and of numerous neighbors who are frequent visitors of the Mater Orphanorum Chappel.
